DEVELOPER EXPERIMENTS

A Level Darkroom Work

I created all these images in the darkroom; To achieve this dripping effect I used a pipette to carefully apply the developer to the photographic paper so that only some areas would appear. The first 3 images are from a film that I had taken in march 2020. The other images are all digital photographs that I made into negatives, and then positives that allowed me to get them onto darkroom paper. This type of effect is known as a 'chemigram'.

PRINTS WITH PHOTOGRAMS

A Level Darkroom work

These images have all been created in the darkroom. I projected a film I had developed onto photographic paper and then added objects on top of the paper. I did this to obstruct the projection which is what caused the layer photogram effect. Photographer Mari Mahr, inspired me to do this as, in her work, she places objects on top of her original images and re-photographs them.

RIPPING AND COLLAGING IMAGES

A Level Work

This handmade editing process means you have to be very precise with how you place the torn paper. This is a fun technique that I really enjoyed doing.
I used this technique to edit my 'Cinderella' series so that the happy Disney images can contrast with the scary Grimm's Tales version. I also used this technique on some black and white portraits I had taken for my selected colour project.

DIGITAL EDITING ON PHOTOSHOP

A level Work

After looking at photographer Jasper James' work, I decided to create these photoshop edits using similar techniques. To create these I used a number of tools on photoshop, including the quick selection tool, layer and clipping masks, gradient mapping, blend modes and text. These images have been developed from my Stanley Kubrick style shoo. I feel that the way I have edited them helps convey the narrative.

ETCHING INTO IMAGES & USING INK

A Level Work

These edits are inspired by Lucas Simoes' work. I etched into my photographs with a compass to create a distressed look (one is a positive and one is a negative). I then added ink to where I had etched the image away which adds a burst of colour and texture to the photograph.

SEWING INTO VINTAGE PORTRAITS

A Level Work

This hand crafted series of edits is inspired by Julie Cockburns revival of old fashioned photographs through the method of adding colourful hand sewn patterns into them. I went to a vintage shop in Brighton and purchased these four portraits that I wanted to revive in this way.

GLASS PHOTOGRAMS

A level Darkroom Work

These images explore the creative use of light and how light reflects and refracts. These are essentially photograms of different glass bottles. Each type of glass reacted differently to the enlargers in the darkroom meaning each type of glass had to be exposed for different amounts of times.

CHROMATIC ABERRATION

A Level Work

I created these images on photoshop for my selected colour project. On photoshop, I duplicated the image that I was working with and chose different colour combinations for each duplicate layer, using the 'layer style' tool. I then moved the images into a composition that looked aesthetically pleasing.
